Is All Truth God’s Truth? – The Need For A Thorough Purging - By: Dave Hunt - thebereancall.org

The need for a thorough purging while there may be some Christian psychologists who use only Scripture in their counseling, their designation of themselves as “psychologists” is unfortunate. That word has an established meaning, which can only create confusion by the honor it seems to bestow upon a godless system that does not merit any association with Christianity at all. Unfortunately, there are also Christian psychologists who accept and practice almost every kind of psychology and therapy invented. By this means, godless beliefs and practices (which have already proved to be ineffective and have numerous critics among secular psychologists and psychiatrists themselves), have been brought into the church. In order to return to biblical Christianity, the church must purge itself of psychological theories and terminology, and then divest itself of this rival religion which it has taken to its bosom.
But instead of purging out the leaven, the church is giving increasing trust and honor to psychology. Christians are asked to accept psychology as an additional source of truth and to put it on an equal footing with God’s Word, which Christ said is alone “the truth” (John 17:17). Yet psychology is as unstable as water. Its false gospel continually changes as its conflicting theories ebb and flow, and its gurus come and go. Lawrence LeShan, past president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology, has suggested that psychotherapy will be known as the hoax of the twentieth century. Leading secular psychologists and psychiatrists are debunking their own profession in books and articles with such titles as: The Myth of Mental Illness, The Myth of Neurosis, Psychotherapy,The Dangerous Cure, The Death of Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis, The Impossible Profession, etc. Nevertheless, discredited psychological themes which have deceived and damaged the church are being embraced within the church. Martin L. Gross comments: Today, the M.D. psychiatrist and his first cousin, the Ph.D. psychologist, have appointed themselves the undisputed Solomons of our era....The new seer delivers his pronouncements with the infallible air of a papal bull, a stance which intimidates even the most confident of laymen.
We are expected to rejoice that the Bible has been discovered at long last to be in agreement with humanism. Best of all, this means that Christians no longer need to go about with a hangdog look and poor self-image, but can now hold their heads high before the world, and especially in academic circles. All this because a “new reformation” that psychologizes Christianity has uncovered new interpretations of Scripture never before known in the history of the church, thus bringing Christianity into line with the theories of anti-Christians such as Freud and Jung.
This “new and improved Christianity” is being welcomed with apparent disregard for the increasing admissions by the psychologists themselves that psychotherapy is really bankrupt. R.D. Laing, one of psychology’s most respected leaders, recently gave his opinion that   not even one “fundamental insight into relations between human beings [had] resulted from a century of psychotherapy.” Yet the discredited theories of psychology have brought fundamental new insight into “God’s truth”! Before believing that suspicious scenario, we would do well to heed the many non-Christian psychologists and psychiatrists who are issuing warnings, such as the following by internationally respected psychiatrist and author E. Fuller Torrey: The techniques used by western psychiatrists are, with few exceptions, on exactly the same scientific plane as the techniques of witch doctors. Psychiatry...is a false Messiah.
What is Truth?
Should we not consider it odd that God has apparently inspired non-Christians such as Freud, Jung, and now more recently Maslow and Rogers, with “truths” hidden to the apostles and prophets and all of the leaders in the entire history of the church until the present time? No, we are told reassuringly, this is not to be considered strange at all. What we allegedly need to understand is: “All truth is God’s truth” and there are many sources for it outside the Bible.
What is meant by  truth is seldom considered. Are we talking about scientific facts involving the brain and the body, or about God’s truth which saves and elevates the soul and spirit? Jesus said, “Thy Word is truth” and “I am the truth,” not part of the truth. Psychotherapy deals with a subject upon which God has spoken with finality and about which He claims to have communicated in His Word the whole truth. There are no parts of this truth missing from the Bible and left to be discovered among the theories of the ungodly. To suggest that there is such a lack contradicts the clear testimony of Scripture and the consistent teaching of the church for nineteen centuries. That church withstood the Roman arena and the Inquisition and left the stamp of victorious Christian living and the blood of her martyrs upon the pages of history long before Freud or his successors came upon the scene to muddy the clear water of life.
It mocks God and His word to say that God inspired Freud with insight into methods of diagnosing and treating the soul and spirit of man. It is blasphemy to suggest that anti-Christians have been inspired to fill in a missing portion of the truth that God himself declares He has already revealed in its fullness in His holy Word. The very idea of a Christian psychology violates basic biblical principles, and increasing numbers of those once involved are beginning to see this and to reject this false religion.
Paul wrote, “...the things of God knoweth no man, but by the Spirit of God” (I Corinthians 2:11) It is clear in the context that he is not talking about scientific discoveries made by atheists through an insight into nature or the witness of a moral conscience which God gives to all men. Paul is referring not to  natural but to  spiritual truths, which he specifically states are revealed by God only to true believers. The Bible clearly claims to be written to those who belong to the Lord, and the truth it communicates is called “the things of the Spirit of God.” We are told in unequivocal terms, ...the natural [unsaved] man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned (1 Cor. 2:14).
Undermining of Biblical Authority
How can “God’s truth” be communicated to humanists who have rejected even the witness of creation and conscience? Are such persons really God’s chosen vessels to reveal heretofore undiscovered spiritual truths to the body of Christ? According to the Bible the only “truth” from God that the unsaved person can understand is that he is a sinner and needs a Savior. Until he is born again of the Spirit of God through faith in Christ, he cannot understand the “things of God” that are “spiritually discerned.” God’s truth, says Paul, is only understood by the “spiritual man” who has been born of God’s Spirit into the family of God. It is only such, Paul declares, who “have the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16). To the unsaved, Jesus said, “He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God” (John 8:47). Yet we are asked to believe that a part of God’s truth heretofore unknown to those who are of God and who have the mind of Christ has lately been discovered by those who are not of God, and that this new insight ought to be incorporated by the church into its understanding of the Word of God. Before we accept such an unbiblical and illogical thesis we need better justification than the plea that “All truth is God’s truth”!
The Christian life is not a grit-your-teeth and holdyour-breath roller-coaster ride. It is Christ living His resurrection life in those who have opened their hearts to Him. To suggest that psychotherapeutic techniques lately discovered by Freud, et al., are now necessary in order for today’s Christian to experience the abundant life in Christ is clearly a new gospel that denies the sufficiency of Christ and God’s Word. Tragically, the entire Bible is being reinterpreted on the basis of godless psychological theories. This new authority has undermined the confidence Christians once had in Christ’s power to save and keep and satisfy. This fact is recognized even by secular psychologists. Bernie Zilbergeld writes, Psychology has become something of a substitute for our old belief systems. Different schools of therapy offer visions of the good life and how to live it, and those whose ancestors took comfort from the words of God and worshipped at the altars of Christ and Yahweh now take solace from and worship at the altars of Freud, Jung, Carl Rogers, Albert Ellis, Werner Erhard, and a host of similar authorities.
A Vital Issue
In summary, by accepting a “new interpretation” of the Bible imposed from outside and which actually contradicts the Scriptures, the church has embraced an alien gospel administered by a new class of priests supported by humanistic authority. With its own vocabulary and rituals and academic knowledge, this new clergy has gained authority over those who know only God and His Word. The latter are no longer considered to be qualified to counsel from Scripture. That long-established function has taken on new meaning: it now involves the diagnosis of psychological problems and the prescription of psychological solutions and must therefore be under the direction of those trained in this art. Nor can appeal be made to the Scriptures as a means of correcting this new priestly class, because they alone allegedly hold the keys to a vital part of “God’s truth” that supplements the Bible.
In fairness to Christian psychologists, many of them have been motivated by the genuine desire to help the multitudes of hurting people who are not receiving the care and guidance they ought to have from their brothers and sisters in the body of Christ. One of the most desperate needs within the church is for personal and family and marriage counseling—but it must be biblical and not psychological. For this need to be supplied, the church must be willing to support biblical counselors who can thereby provide the necessary help without charging for it. Many young people sense a call from God upon their lives to work in this vital area, but the only possibility for support is to charge a fee, which means that they must be licensed by the state and therefore conform to secular standards of education and competency. The church must return to God’s Word as the only and sufficient guide for “life And godliness” (2 Peter 1: 3-4). Unfortunately, Christian colleges and seminaries have almost all succumbed to the pressure to be accredited by secular agencies. As a result, courses in “pastoral counseling” are generally heavily weighted with psychology in order to meet the humanistic standards.
Furthermore, the healing of broken lives cannot be accomplished by an hour of counseling once or even several times a week. It can take place only in the context of the caring and loving family of God, the body of Christ, concerned for the welfare of each member. There ought to be older couples, mature in the Lord and leading exemplary, Spirit-filled lives of leadership, who will give the time and expend the effort to take under their wing younger couples who may be having marital or financial or other problems. The restoration of true Christianity is an individual matter. Revival begins with each of us. We dare not wait for someone else to say or do what is needed, but each of us before the Lord must step out in the leading and power of the Holy Spirit to fulfill that ministry to which God has called us. God’s Word enjoins us: Warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men (1Thessalonians 5:14). Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2).
Pontius Pilate: "What is Truth?"
The Truth of God vs. The Facts of Nature
Those who proclaim that “All truth is God’s truth” confuse the truth with mere facts of nature. That the latter are not included in the former is quite clear from what Jesus said: “...when he, the Spirit of truth, is come [whom the world cannot receive] he will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13;14:17). Since all truth is revealed only by the Spirit of God “whom the world cannot receive,” and since “the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God” (1 Corinthians 2:9-14), if science were part of “God’s truth,” then all scientific discoveries would have to be made only by Christians. Yet non-Christians make great scientists. So even if psychology were a science, which it is not, it would still not be part of “God’s truth,” which is revealed by God only to His own.
Let us place our trust wholly in God and in His Word and trust His promises fully. In that faith alone we will live the abundant life promised to all those in whom Christ dwells.
