The Friends of Israel Newsletter – January 2012 – (The Arab Spring and Christian Persecution)

Dear Friend:
The dawn of a new year did not usher in a cause for celebration among millions of suffering Christians in a growing number of nations.  Journalist Jeff Jacoby reported that in the Middle East, the vaulted Arab Spring has led to the ascendancy of radical, Sharia-driven Islamists and has bloomed into a fearsome episode of terror against Christians.  And the slaughter isn’t confined to the Arab-Muslim world.  Brutal genocide against followers of Jesus Christ is reported regularly by such organizations as Compass Direct News.  Here are some recent headlines:
·        Pakistan:  An Evangelist Shot Dead
·        Nigeria:  At least 45 Christians Killed in Plateau State
·        Nepal:  Christians Attacked
·        Iraq:  Islamic Rioters Attack Christian Shops in Kurdish North
·        Egypt:  Muslim Mobs in Egypt Attack Christian Homes
·        Burma:  Christian Civilians in Burma Face Deadly Attacks
·        India:  Police Detain, Beat Converts From Islam
·        Sudan:  Church Faces Increasing Hostility in Sudan
We often document the alarming rise in anti-Semitism, not only in the East, but in areas of America and Europe as well because we need to be alert and informed about issues that reflect the last days.  Yet we must also understand the broader range of attacks on Christians and the warfare being waged against the people of God.  A few days ago I read Proverbs 24 and was struck by the depth of our obligation to respond to suffering (vv. 11-12).

Deliver those who are drawn toward death, and hold back those stumbling to the slaughter.  If you say, “Surely we did not know this,” does not He who weighs the hearts consider it?  He who keeps your soul, does He not know it?  And will He not render to each man according to his deeds?

Will you join me in asking the Lord to burden us as never before with an intercessor’s heart?  We need hearts like that of Abraham when he pleaded for righteous souls in sin-ridden Sodom.  And I can promise you that, in this new year, The Friends of Israel will spare no expense in sharing the whole truth—truth about the way things really are, as we stand firm on the mandates of God’s Word whatever the cost.  It will be a year of challenges we’ve not experienced before.  The good news is that we have been forewarned and given the tools to be effective ambassadors for our Lord.

Blessings in Christ,
